Google to delete inactive Gmail accounts soon

Google has announced its intention to increase online security by taking measures and disabling ‘millions of specific’ Gmail accounts in the near future.

For this, Google has set an urgent deadline for Gmail users, cautioning that certain accounts inactive for the past two years may face deletion in December 2023. Active accounts regularly used for Gmail, Docs, Calendar, and Photos will not be impacted by this update.

The primary objective of this policy is to enhance security by addressing the vulnerability of outdated and inactive accounts to cyber threats such as phishing scams, spam, and account hijacking.

In a statement, Google clarified, “If a Google Account has not been used or signed into for at least 2 years, we may delete the account and its contents.” This encompasses data stored within Google Workspace, including Gmail, Docs, Drive, Meet, Calendar, and Google Photos.

To avert the risk of deletion, Google advises users to remain vigilant and follow simple steps. Before deleting an account, Google will dispatch multiple notifications to both the personal and recovery email addresses provided by the user.
