Terrorist activities in Pakistan have left behind a trail of death and destruction, as well as a crop of heroes, who have laid down examples of bravery. Of them, Akash Bashir is a Pakistani Christian boy, who gave up his life to save the lives of countless others. He has been given the title of “Servant of God” by the Vatican Congress. The title “Servant of God” is an expression used for a member of the Catholic Church whose life and works are being investigated in consideration for official recognition by the Pope and the Catholic Church as a saint in heaven. Bashir was a young man of only 20 years of age when he sacrificed his life while barring a suicide bomber from entering a Catholic church in Lahore in 2015. A terrorist group affiliated with the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed the responsibility of the attack, which killed 17 and injured more than 70 people.
Pakistan has seen a fair share of violence. From suicide attacks by various terrorist outfits to targeted killings. Society as a whole has been targeted time and again. However, minorities have always been a more vulnerable group. Most of these atrocities started during and after former military ruler Zia-ul-Haq’s regime in the 1980s. The man himself left the world but his policies have continued to have repercussions for anyone who has strayed away from the narrative of the majority of the population. As a cherry on top, groups like TTP were formed and they bombed almost every nook and corner of every important city in Pakistan.
In recognition of Bashir’s sacrifice, the Vatican has awarded him with the aforementioned title. Although this recognition has made the Christian community of Pakistan very proud, it also saddens them as it is a constant reminder of the atrocities committed against them in a country they call home. Recently, two clergymen in Peshawar were targeted, one of whom lost his life while the other suffered injuries. The attack was condemned by the government; however, nothing will be done for the safety of minorities that are a part of this country. They have been suffering since ages and are likely to suffer even more if the status quo remains as tolerance levels are decreasing with each passing day and religious fundamentalism is on the rise.
