The Aafia Movement organized peaceful protests in various cities across the country on Sunday.
Protests were held in Karachi, Islamabad, Lahore, Peshawar, Hyderabad, Badin, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Abbottabad, and other cities, demanding the release and honorable repatriation of Dr. Aafia Siddiqui, who is serving an 86-year sentence.
The demonstrations saw a large turnout of Dr. Aafia’s supporters, citizens, and human rights activists.
On the occasion, Dr. Fouzia Siddiqui, Chairperson of the Global Aafia Movement, urged the government of Pakistan to take immediate steps for Dr. Aafia Siddiqui’s release.
She stated that Aafia is a Pakistani citizen who has been unlawfully imprisoned in a U.S. jail for over 20 years. In 2010, U.S. Judge Richard Berman sentenced Aafia to 86 years in prison following a biased judicial process, denying her the legal right to defend herself.
Dr. Fouzia added that Aafia’s legal team has filed lawsuits against the abuse she faced in a Texas prison, including under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) in Washington and a case against Judge Berman in New York.
She emphasized that they will not forget Aafia and that their struggle for her release will continue.
