World News Day is being observed in Pakistan and around the world to highlight the importance of journalism as part of a global campaign.

On 28th September 2024, World News Day is celebrated by the World Editors Forum and the Canadian Journalism Foundation with the aim of uniting more than 500 news organizations worldwide to spread the message that informed decisions about the future require credible journalism.

Today, thousands of media outlets globally come together to raise awareness about the significance of credible journalism. In this context, we will also discuss certain aspects of modern and traditional journalism.

This year’s theme is “Choose Truth” which calls for the media to stand firm in the battle against misinformation and to fulfill its true role.

This theme has been designed by South Africa’s Maverick newspaper’s Project Continuum reminding us how difficult it is in current times to maintain transparency and unbiased reporting especially now when trust in the media is diminishing due to the mix of accurate and inaccurate information.

There was a time when the day would begin with a newspaper thrown on the doorstep but with time that newspaper has been replaced by a mobile phone on the bedside table offering the world’s information with a single click. We can say that social media has somewhat democratized the sharing of information as now everyone with access to communication and the internet can contribute to shaping global opinion.

Various social media platforms now provide an endless stream of information on every subject. However, unfortunately, misinformation and disinformation spread rapidly. There is a fine line between the two: disinformation refers to information deliberately spread to deceive someone while misinformation is information that spreads accidentally without intent. As a result, it is becoming increasingly difficult to distinguish between truth and fabricated stories.

In this uncertain digital era, traditional media is trying to fulfill its responsibility even though sometimes news outlets struggle to keep pace with the speed at which information spreads. Nevertheless, they continue to play their role in helping readers separate fact from fiction.

It cannot be denied that the availability of new sources of information makes it easier to find news and it also highlights personal preferences and biases. On the other hand, newsrooms must assess themselves to provide unbiased reporting and factual information to rebuild readers trust.

In today’s world, reporters and editors are often accused of bias or unfairness in reporting. However, to refute these claims, journalists will have to present themselves more transparently to the public.

Although biased reporting was previously discussed at that time, access to information wasn’t as easy nor was there as open an expression of personal preferences.

Here, we’ll also tell you what a reporter or editor should do to avoid being labelled as biased or influenced by personal preferences. It’s essential that they maintain transparency in their approach, uphold high ethical standards and be ready to correct their mistakes without hesitation whenever necessary.

A journalist should always hold themselves accountable. They should always remember that journalism is their core mission with the purpose of addressing injustice and giving a voice to the voiceless. In these times when many young readers are turning to social media for their news, it is our responsibility to educate them on how to distinguish between trustworthy journalism and misinformation.

This is an era where a lie can cause a global stir in the blink of an eye. Teaching young people to differentiate between right and wrong can help tackle this issue.

Undoubtedly, these are challenging times for journalists as the revenue streams that once sustained news publishers have become obsolete in the digital age. However, this should not divert publishers or journalists from their responsibility towards their readers.

Readers should also remember that ethical, reliable and honest journalism will help them get through these tough times to better days. They should prioritize truth over sensationalism and scrutinize every story with evidence.

Today, more than ever, we need the support of journalists and news organizations who remain steadfast in their mission to honestly inform the public.
