TEHRAN: A deadly flash flood swept through the southern city of Jiroft on Monday, killing 15, state media reported on Tuesday, killing double the earlier estimate of six fatalities.
The official IRNA news agency reported, “After finding the last body from the flood incident of the Halil River in Jiroft, the death toll is announced to be 15 in total.” Rescue work is over.
Most of those killed were Afghan migrants who lived in Iran, ISNA News Agency quoted other sources as saying. Jiroft is a city in the drought-prone southern province of Kerman.
Experts say that climate change is driving up both drought and super rainstorms.
Iran has had many droughts over the last decade, but has also seen flood after flood. That pattern worsens when heavy rain falls over parched soil.
Heavy rain in southern Iran killed at least 80 people and caused estimated losses of about $200 million in 2022.
