Iranian state media has reported that Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has been killed in recent US and Israeli attacks, describing his death as a “martyrdom.” Authorities announced 40 days of national mourning across the country following the confirmation.
According to official Iranian reports, Khamenei was killed on Saturday during coordinated American and Israeli naval and air strikes. State media claimed he was targeted inside his office. The announcement came amid rapidly escalating tensions in the region after large-scale military operations were launched against Iran.
Earlier, Israeli media outlets had reported that the Iranian leader was sheltering in an underground bunker along with close associates when around 30 bombs were dropped on his compound. Israeli sources claimed he was killed along with several senior officials. Reports also suggested that an image of Khamenei’s body had been shown to US President Donald Trump.
British media, quoting Israeli authorities, also reported that Khamenei’s body had been located. In a video statement, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said there were strong indications that the Iranian Supreme Leader was no longer alive. He added that Israeli operations against Iran would continue for as long as necessary.
Israeli officials further claimed that several commanders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps were also killed in the strikes, along with senior nuclear officials. According to these reports, Khamenei’s compound was destroyed and thousands of additional targets could be struck in the coming days.
The large-scale attacks, launched jointly by the United States and Israel, reportedly resulted in the deaths of at least 201 Iranian citizens and left 747 others injured. Iranian media also stated that Defense Minister Amir Nasserzadeh and Revolutionary Guards chief Mohammad Pakpour were among those killed.
The situation remains tense as conflicting claims and counterclaims continue to emerge, raising fears of further escalation in the region.
