ISLAMABAD, April 2 — Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said Thursday that Pakistan is working tirelessly to de-escalate tensions in the Middle East, engaging in talks and mediation efforts as the war between the United States, Israel, and Iran enters its second month.
Addressing a high-level meeting attended by military leaders, provincial chief ministers, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, and federal cabinet members, Shehbaz emphasized Pakistan’s role as a friend to all parties. “The flames of war in the region have not yet been extinguished; however, Pakistan has been working tirelessly to ease tensions, engaging in talks and diplomatic efforts at various levels,” he said.
Pakistan recently hosted a quadrilateral foreign ministers’ meeting in Islamabad with representatives from Turkiye, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt, which drew international praise. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar also returned from China after talks aimed at calming the situation, while Chief of Defence Forces Asim Munir played a key role in ensuring safe passage for Pakistani ships through the Strait of Hormuz.
Shehbaz acknowledged the conflict’s toll on Pakistan’s economy, noting that the government has provided Rs129 billion in support to keep essential sectors functioning. He urged the elite to show self-sacrifice and stressed the importance of protecting vulnerable populations, agriculture, and public transport.
Pakistan and China jointly proposed a five-point initiative this week calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities, humanitarian access, and renewed peace talks. The statement also highlighted the need to safeguard sovereignty, protect civilians, and ensure the security of shipping lanes in the Gulf.
UK officials have also commended Pakistan’s mediation efforts, underscoring Islamabad’s growing role as a regional peace broker.
