Announcement of match officials for Cricket World Cup final

Richard Illingworth and Richard Kettleborough, hailing from England, have been designated as the on-field umpires for the forthcoming ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 final between India and Australia in Ahmedabad. The English pair is entrusted with overseeing the crucial on-field responsibilities during this high-stakes clash.

For Kettleborough, this marks his second appearance in a World Cup final, having previously officiated in the 2015 Cricket World Cup final. His partner during that event was Kumar Dharmasena, and over 93,000 spectators witnessed the intense game. However, this number is expected to be surpassed as a three-figure crowd is anticipated on Sunday, with the host nation seeking to replicate their 2011 triumph and secure the World Cup on home soil.

This occasion also marks the second World Cup final for Illingworth, although it is his inaugural appearance as a match official. He was part of the 1992 Cricket World Cup final as a player. Both Illingworth and Kettleborough were elevated to the ICC International List on the same day in November 2009. They served as on-field umpires during the recent semi-finals, with Illingworth overseeing India’s victory over New Zealand in Mumbai, while Kettleborough officiated Australia’s thrilling win against South Africa in Kolkata.

Both umpires boast illustrious careers, with each having secured the David Shepherd Trophy for ICC’s Umpire of the Year. Kettleborough clinched the award three consecutive times between 2013-2015, while Illingworth claimed it in 2019 and 2022. Other officials for the crucial final on Sunday include Joel Wilson as the third umpire, fourth umpire Chris Gaffaney, and match referee Andy Pycroft, all of whom also played roles in officiating the semi-finals.
