An official said the new rates were decided by conducting market surveys and due to appeals from some groups of government employees. The new ceilings on rental charges will apply to all new appointments and other scenarios where a government employee has to pay off the difference from his pocket. Under such circumstances, the rented may be hiked up to the owner’s demand or the new ceiling-whichever is lower.

In addition, the revised rates shall also be applied to tenancy contracts signed under the Accommodation Allocation Rules, 2002, or the decentralized house rent system that took effect on July 31, 2004, for lapsed leases. Lease agreements would become based on the existing rental evaluation, new cap of the occupant, or the owner’s demand of payment, whichever is lesser.
