Previous this year, HMD Global announced it would eventually eliminate the use of the Nokia brand on its smartphones going forward and sell those products under the HMD banner instead. But even though that was announced, other Nokia branded smartphones, tablets, feature phones, and accessories were still on sale in several markets. Latest check on European websites, though, finds that it is the end – Nokia-branded devices nowhere to be found. This would potentially mean consumers in Europe will no longer be able to buy Nokia-branded phones.
Apart from discontinuing the sales under the Nokia.com website, HMD’s official site still appears to sell Nokia-branded products in Asia, Africa, and Latin America and also in New Zealand and the Middle East. These may become the last sales channels for the devices that are sold at the moment. On the HMD store page, Nokia mobile phones and even feature phones are still listed on the page, and HMD recently confirmed that these devices will continue to get updates on future software upgrades. But how long that will take is anyone’s guess.
This would entirely signify that HMD Global is moving away from the Nokia brand altogether and forcing the shift of the company to build its own identity under the name HMD.
HMD and Nokia: A Changing Partnership
Originally a telecommunications company, Nokia Corporation has maintained dominance in the global mobile market and owns significant segments of communications technology patents. In fact, for years, Nokia has been locked in a courtroom battle with the world’s largest players – including Apple, Samsung, and BBK Technologies, which owns Oppo, Vivo, and OnePlus. However, HMD Global’s latest step seems to ensure that the famed Nokia brand would not be part of any future smartphones.
