The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication (MoITT) partnered with Meta to launch ALIF, an Urdu version of Meta AI. People in Pakistan can now interact with the AI assistant in their native language, making technology easier and more inclusive.
The launch happened during the “Future in Focus: AI and Innovation” event. The program focused on advancing digital transformation and brought together government officials, tech experts, and academics to promote AI adoption across the country.
Federal Minister for IT, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, opened the event. She said, “Pakistan is moving toward a future where technology empowers every citizen. Our National AI Policy and partnership with Meta reflect our commitment to AI literacy, innovation, and digital transformation across government and academia.”
During the event, Meta also introduced a localized version of the “Transforming Public Sector Innovation in Asia Pacific with Llama” guide, developed with Deloitte. The guide shows how Meta’s open-source AI model, Llama, can improve government operations, enhance public services, and strengthen data sovereignty.
Earlier this year, MoITT, Meta, the Higher Education Commission (HEC), NCEAC, and Atomcamp launched an AI Literacy Program. The program trains 350 non-computer science faculty members in Pakistani universities. It gives them core AI skills to prepare students for the future workforce.
In addition, the event announced initiatives to empower the public sector and local community. ALIF helps people access information, communicate, and stay connected in Urdu. The government and Meta plan to expand AI usage in education, governance, and daily life.
Officials said these steps will boost digital literacy, encourage innovation, and position Pakistan as a regional hub for AI. The country moves closer to integrating AI technology for everyone in a language they understand.
