Winners of RTI quiz contest announced; emphasis on transparency and accountability

Chief Information Commissioner Shoaib Ahmad Siddiqui has highlighted the role of the Right to Information (RTI) in enhancing transparency, accountability, and citizen empowerment in Pakistan.

Speaking at the announcement of winners for the Pakistan RTI Quiz Contest 2024, he stressed that the right to information, enshrined under Article 19-A of the Constitution, strengthens the relationship between citizens and the government.

The quiz contest, organized by the Pakistan Information Commission in partnership with the Press Network of Pakistan, was held to mark International Day for Universal Access to Information. Siddiqui, addressing the participants in a video message, said, “This day signifies a global commitment to ensuring every person’s right to seek and share information. It also provides an opportunity to assess the progress made by the Pakistan Information Commission in empowering citizens to access information from public authorities.”

He praised the collaboration with the Press Network of Pakistan for organizing the quiz, which aimed to raise awareness about the RTI, particularly among university students, journalists, and young people. “Informed citizens are better positioned to make decisions in the best interest of the country,” he added.

Sabahuddin Qazi, Chief Executive of the Press Network of Pakistan, emphasized the importance of quiz contests in fostering community engagement and knowledge-sharing. “The Right of Access to Information Act, 2017, is a landmark achievement in our journey toward transparency, accountability, and prosperity,” Qazi said, noting the contest’s role in promoting a knowledge-based society where citizens are empowered to exercise their fundamental rights.

The RTI Quiz Contest 2024 aimed to raise public awareness about the significance of the Right of Access to Information as a key driver for achieving the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, particularly Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 16, which promotes “just, peaceful, and inclusive societies.” Organizers reported that a total of 2,511 entries were submitted nationwide, with nearly 50% of participants being female. Notably, citizens from remote areas such as Burewala, Chitral, Daska, Mithi, Skardu, Quetta, and Azad Kashmir also took part in the contest.
