Lieutenant General Muhammad Asim Malik has been appointed as the new Director General of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and is scheduled to assume office on September 30. The announcement came through a press release issued by the military’s media arm, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), on Monday.
Gen Malik, who currently holds the position of Adjutant General at General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi, will take over from Lt Gen Nadeem Anjum. Lt Gen Anjum had been appointed as the head of ISI in 2021 by then-prime minister Imran Khan.
Lt Gen Nadeem Anjum, who was commissioned into the Pakistan Army in 1988, has served in various key roles throughout his career. Prior to his appointment as ISI chief, he commanded the Karachi-based Corps V. His career milestones also include commanding a brigade in Kurram Agency, serving as Commandant at the Command and Staff College in Quetta, and leading the Frontier Corps (North) in Balochistan.
Gen Asim Malik brings a wealth of operational experience, having served in important roles in both Balochistan and Waziristan. He has commanded an infantry division in Balochistan and led an infantry brigade in the volatile Waziristan region, equipping him with valuable expertise in counterinsurgency and military operations. His elevation to ISI chief represents a significant leadership transition for Pakistan’s premier intelligence agency.
