The clerical leadership of Iran seeks relief from a level of U.S. sanctions that have proven ruinous to the country. The tension in the region goes much deeper with the previous President Donald Trump deserting the 2015 nuclear deal in 2018 and reinstatement of sharp sanctions. Thus far, attempts at restorative measures towards the deal bear no fruit.
Relations with the West have also deteriorated in the aftermath of recent Hamas rocket attacks on Israel, and as Tehran is pushing its advantage in the battle against Ukraine, in its aiding Russia. Pezeshkian is the centrist leader who came to power in August, criticizing Israel’s moves in Gaza that included the labeling of the mass killing of Gaza’s civilian population as “genocide,” and was seeking an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
We want peace for everybody; we do not have a will to go to war with anyone,” he said. “Iran rejects any war and emphasizes the urgent necessity to bring this ongoing war in Ukraine to an immediate end.”.
Further, other reports indicate that secret talks between Russia and Yemen’s Houthi rebels in their discussions over the latter’s transfer of anti-ship missiles are said to be held in Iran. In this case, this development is yet another sign of warming relations of Iran with Moscow as the two continue their warming relations amidst growing geopolitical tension.
